Standard vs Deep Cleaning: What’s Actually Different?
“Do I need a deep clean or just a regular one?” It’s the question we hear most from new Burlington customers. Here’s the concrete, room-by-room breakdown so you can book the right one the first time.
The Short Answer
Standard cleaning maintains a clean home. Deep cleaning restores a dirty one. A standard clean handles the visible, high-traffic surfaces — the stuff you’d notice on a walkthrough. A deep clean goes after everything standard cleaning skips: the grime that’s built up in grout lines, on baseboards, inside appliances, and along window tracks over months. Different task lists, different amounts of labor, different results.
What Standard Cleaning Covers (Room by Room)
Our standard cleaning checklist, room by room:
Kitchen: Counters and cabinet fronts wiped, sink scrubbed and faucet polished, microwave cleaned inside and out, appliance exteriors and stovetop wiped, floors swept and mopped, trash emptied.
Bathrooms: Toilet scrubbed and disinfected inside and out, shower and tub scrubbed, sink and vanity wiped, mirrors cleaned, fixtures polished, floors mopped, trash emptied.
Bedrooms: All surfaces dusted, mirrors cleaned, carpets vacuumed or hard floors mopped, beds made (with fresh linens you leave out), wastebaskets emptied.
Living areas: Furniture and shelves dusted, electronics dusted, upholstery vacuumed, carpets vacuumed or floors mopped, cushions and throws tidied.
Throughout the home: Cobwebs removed, light switches and doorknobs wiped, trash taken out.
What you won’t see on this list: baseboards, grout scrubbing, inside the oven or fridge, window tracks, blinds detail, ceiling fans, or light fixtures. Those live on the deep-clean list — which is exactly the point. Standard cleaning keeps up; it doesn’t catch up.
What Deep Cleaning Adds (Room by Room)
A deep cleaning includes everything in the standard clean, plus the detail layer:
Kitchen: Everything in standard, plus — inside the oven and fridge (emptied by you first), grout scrubbed, cabinet interiors wiped, range hood degreased, baseboards hand-wiped, window sills and tracks cleaned, light fixtures dusted.
Bathrooms: Everything in standard, plus — grout and tile detail scrubbed, shower door descaled, baseboards hand-wiped, exhaust fan dusted, behind-toilet detail, cabinet interiors wiped.
Bedrooms: Everything in standard, plus — baseboards hand-wiped throughout, window sills and tracks, blinds dusted slat by slat, ceiling fans, closet shelving dusted, light fixtures, wall spot-cleaning.
Living areas: Everything in standard, plus — baseboards, window tracks and sills, blinds detail, ceiling fans and vents, furniture moved and vacuumed behind/under (where accessible), wall spot-cleaning.
The pattern: if it’s at hand height and visible, standard cleaning gets it. If it requires bending down, reaching up, opening something, or scrubbing something textured — that’s deep cleaning.

When to Book Each One
Book a deep clean when:
- It’s your first time hiring a cleaner (or the first clean in 6+ months)
- You’re moving in or out — landlords inspect at deep-clean level
- You’re hosting an event, listing a home, or coming back from a long trip
- The last year was rough on the place — common with turnover near the UVM campus each May
Book standard cleaning when:
- The home is already in good shape and you want to keep it there
- You’re setting up a recurring schedule — weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly
- You just need the regular reset: kitchens, baths, floors, dusting, trash
The combination that works best: most of our long-term Chittenden County customers start with one deep clean, then move to a recurring standard schedule. Deep resets the baseline; recurring holds it — the most cost-effective way to stay clean year-round.
What a Deep Clean Won’t Do
Honesty matters here. A deep clean is thorough, but it’s not restoration. It won’t remove mold inside walls, refinish worn hardwood, or repair damaged grout. If a surface is damaged rather than dirty, cleaning reveals the damage — it doesn’t fix it. We’d rather tell you that upfront.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know which one my home needs?
The six-month rule works: if your home hasn’t had a thorough top-to-bottom clean in six months or more, start deep. If it’s been maintained, standard is right. When in doubt, describe your place when you book — we’d rather talk you into the cheaper option that’s actually right.
Can I book a deep clean once and then switch to recurring standard cleans?
Absolutely — it’s our most common pattern. The deep clean handles the backlog, and recurring standard visits (weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly) keep it from building up again, at a lower per-visit cost.
Do I need to be home during the clean?
No. Most customers hand over a key, garage code, or lockbox combination on the first visit. Every cleaner is background-checked, and the same checklist runs whether you’re home or not.
Should I tidy up before the cleaner arrives?
A light pickup helps. We’re there to clean, not organize — clearing clothes off the floor and dishes out of the sink lets the crew spend time on actual cleaning. No need to pre-clean; just declutter surfaces so we can clean them.
The Bottom Line
Standard and deep cleaning aren’t “good” and “better” versions of the same thing — they’re different jobs. Match the service to your home’s condition: deep if it’s been a while, standard to maintain, recurring to hold the results.
